Closely-Guarded Pennsylvania Catfish Fishing Secrets

By Daniel Eggertsen

While the state may not be the first destination that comes to mind for a successful excursion to the lake with your rod and reel, Pennsylvania catfish fishing is actually quite fulfilling in many area lakes and rivers.

Flatheads, bullheads, and channel cats can be found in abundance, and a trip to the nearest fishing hole can be a great family outing. Especially in recent years, with flatheads having appeared in the local waters from their native homes in the Ohio River and Lake Erie drainages in the western part of the state, Pennsylvania catfish fishing has grown in popularity.

In the middle Allegheny River, between Tionesta in the north and East Brady in the south, you”ll find a number of great flatheads and channel cats. This is due mostly to the location of a large warm-water fishery in the area, which spawns catfish as well as other warm-water dwelling species of fish.

In this area, the catfish will congregate upriver in the biggest, deepest pools they can find. There are several dredge holes in the area that make excellent gathering points for catfish. Pennsylvania catfish fishing in this area of the river can produce results both from the shore and from a boat, with inviting shore locations at Oil City, Tionesta, and Reno, where there are a large number of dredge holes (also known as eddies).

If you choose to boat this area, keep in mind that the middle Allegheny River is shallow and free-flowing, and you”ll probably want to opt for a jet-drive outboard or a non-powered boat like a kayak or canoe.

Pennsylvania catfish fishing is also popular in the lower Allegheny River, which consists of the area between East Brady to the north and Pittsburgh to the south.

This portion of the river is impounded by eight lock and dam systems and is 70 miles in length. Like the middle Allegheny, this section of water is home to both channel and flathead cats, though fishing here almost exclusively requires great knowledge and navigation, especially if you plan to fish from the shoreline.

Because shore fishing varies from one dam to the next, you would do best to stick to the tailrace areas below the dams to count on a good catch. Also check out the slack water areas on the lock sides of the dams, especially at the Rimer, Clinton, Freeport, and Mosgrove areas, where there are hydroelectric facilities on the opposite side that provide excellent low-level waters in August, fostering good fishing conditions.

By Gaizka Pujana

Cartagena de Indias has been declared by UNESCO as a historic and cultural patrimony of humanity due to its rich past. History can be found in many places of the city such as the city walls, the spanish colonial architecture and the impressive military and religious monuments.

There are many places to visit full of historic, cultural, architectural and aesthetic importance. Within the old city walls the main tourist attractions are the Cathedral, the San Francisco monastery, the Gold Museum, the San Agustin convent, the monastery and church San Pedro Claver, the public clock, the modern art museum, the naval museum, The Inquisicion Palace, plaza de Bolivar, Plaza de los coches and casa del Marques de Valdehoyos, among others.

Outside the city walls, the most important places to visit are the San Felipe de Barajas Castle, calle del Arsenal, Fuerte del Pastelillo, La India Catalina, Casa de Rafael Nunez, Ermita de El Cabrero, Candelaria convent and the Old Boots monument. Also, nearby the city there are some fortress such as Bateria del Angel San Rafael, Fuerte San Fernando de Bocachica and Fuerte Bateria de San Jose that helped the Spanish conquerors to defend the city from the English, the French and the pirates.

All the already mentioned attractions are harmoniously combined with beautiful beaches, exotic nearby islands and night life establishments. In terms of beaches and islands you can find them both within the tropical atmosphere of the city or away from civilization and noise.

The main beaches are Bocagrande, El Laguito, La Boquilla, Castillogrande, Marbella and Playa Blanca. The most relevant islands are Islas del Rosario, with crystal and multicolor water perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving; Isla de Baru with white sandy beaches, crystal water, mangles, and multicolor corals; Archipielago de San Bernardo and Isla de Tierra Bomba.

Night life in Cartagena is very exciting and full of bars, restaurants, cafes, casinos and clubs. The recommended zones of the city to find the best night life are El Corralito de Piedra, Calle del Arsenal and Bocagrande. Another thing that can be done at night time is to have a Paseo en Coche or simply take a walk in the old city to enjoy its romantic atmosphere.

Tourist can also practice many sports including of course nautical ones. A visit to the aquarium, the botanic garden and ecological tourism are other activities that can be done in Cartagena and that might take more than a day.

Besides from being the most important tourist destination in the Colombian Caribbean coast it is one of the most important business, meetings and conventions centers of the entire Caribbean.

For obvious reasons Cartagena is the first tourist destination of Colombia for both national and international tourists.

How to Choose the Best Accommodation in Barcelona

By Gaizka Pujana

Like any other famous tourist destination Barcelona has a lot to offer in terms of accommodation. There are many alternatives like hotels, hostels, campsites and holiday apartments, all of them providing both advantages and disadvantages depending on your particular situation and on the season or period of the year.

In the case of hotels, there are countless options ranging from one to five stars. Every hotel has its own particular style; there are fancy, luxurious hotels as well as funky, fashionable ones or simply traditional hotels, and lets face it, there are also crappy ones. Most of the hotels offer a wide range of services and comforts and in general terms, and as stated on the web page of Turisme de Barcelona (Barcelona Tourism) “Since the 1992 Olympic Games, Barcelona has had an extensive, top-quality hotel infrastructure”. The most common problems with hotels are their prices, that usually tend to be higher than the prices of other options, and the booking that is not always easy.

In terms of Hostels, there are approximately ten, not many to choose from. Most of them are located in the vicinity of the old city. Almost all the hostels require guests to rent sheets and some of them lock their doors in the early hours. The general disadvantages of hostels are well known, for example lack of privacy and bathroom sharing are the main issues when analyzing this option. Another problem hostels have is the lack of booking therefore clients have to take the risk of not finding a bed, specially in high season. Prices are its key point but still there isn”t a good price value relationship.

Moving to campsites, there is a fair number of facilities on the outskirts of Barcelona near to areas of natural interest and beaches. Their main problems are location and opening season. The nearest campsite is nine kilometers south-west of the city center and most of them aren”t open all year round but just during the summer.

Finally, Barcelona has a wide range of holiday apartments to rent with all the facilities of home. Usually a holiday apartment in Barcelona is fully equipped and provides bed linen and towels. The apartment in Barcelona can be located in any zone of the city the client desires because there are many companies offering an endless number of flats all over the city. To rent an apartment in Barcelona is easy due to the fact that most of the short tenancy companies work on the Internet. The most known disadvantage of this type of accommodation is that some companies aren”t serious enough and tend to overbook the apartments.

Finding the right place in Barcelona is not an easy task thanks to the huge amounts of information the guest has to analyze beforehand. Just try to place yourself in one of the segments mentioned above, study its advantages as well as its disadvantages and surely the job will be easier.

One of the Wonders of the Natural World

By Douglas Scott

The world s largest coral reef is the Great Barrier Reef which composes of roughly 3000 individual reefs and 900 islands. The reef is located in the Coral Sea off the coast of Queensland s in the northeast of Australia. The Great Barrier Reef is one of the wonders of the natural world it is the world s largest coral reef ecosystem. It was declared a World Heritage in 1981.

More than two million people visit the reef each year generating more than 2 billion Austailian Dollors in tourism dollars. Most of the visitors come to go out on the reef.

A scourge of the reef is bleaching where the corals have died in large numbers. This phenomenon is not exclusive to Queensland s Great Barrier Reef, but has been observed on reefs throughout the world. It is thought the bleaching has been caused by rises in water temperature, although the evidence is not conclusive.

Another one of the dangers to the habitat is the Crown of Thorns starfish. Since the 1960s the Crown of Thorns have been destroying the corals which make up the reef.

The Reef supports a diversity of life, 30 species of whales, porpoises and dolphins, have been recorded in the Great Barrier Reef. Six species of sea turtle come to the reef to breed Olive Ridley, Green Sea Turtle, Hawksbill Turtle, Leatherback Sea Turtle, Loggerhead Sea Turtle and Flat Back Turtles. Over 200 species of birds live on the Reef, including the Roseate Tern and White bellies Sea Eagle. More than 1500 species of fish live on the reef, including the, Red Bass, Clownfish, Red Throat Emperor, and several species of Snappers and Coral Trout. 400 species of corals, both soft corals and hard coral are found on the reef.

Due to its vast, warm clear waters and its accessibility from the floating guest facilities called live aboards, the reef is a very popular destination for the tourists, especially scuba divers. Many cities along the Queensland coast offer boat trips to the reef on a daily basis. Several continental islands have been turned into holiday resorts.

Townsville and Cairns are the largest of these coastal cities with populations of approximately 150,000 each. Unlike most reef environments worldwide, the Reef is the only one where the water catchments area is a home to the industrialised urban areas and where extensive areas of coastal lands and rangelands have been used for agricultural and pastoral purposes.

Canvas Boat Covers Gain in Popularity

By Alexander Thomas

Any boat that is left unprotected for a long time will be attacked by dust, moisture, rats and even people (thieves). Any of these elements can ruin your boat and destroy your investment. Whether it is nature or any living thing, you will need to ensure that your boat is well protected if you want to have it and enjoy it for a long time. And with your boat being such a significant investment, you will find that it is one of the best decisions you could ever make by purchasing a cover for your boat.

Canvas Boat Covers: Form and Function.

If your boat remains outside for long periods of time, you will need to cover it well so it stays protected from all harmful elements. The best cover will need to be dust proof (or at least resistant), water proof, provide UV rays protection, and also ensure that the boat is to a high extent even thief proof. Today, there are many materials which fit this bill. You will even find a special type of polyester which, while waterproof, it also ensures that the moisture that accumulates on the boat can evaporate freely.

Do not make a decision based on the advertisements you see. Buy only after you are satisfied that the cover you are buying offers you the best possible protection for your boat. In this regard nothing can beat the canvas boat cover. It is only with this type of material that the boat can be left totally unguarded because canvas will always provide total protection.

The canvas boat cover is waterproof, thus keeping rain water off your boat; at the same time canvas allows sufficient circulation of air to ensure that moisture does not get accumulated on the boat. The canvas boat cover can be customized to perfection making a perfect fit for your boat. The tight fit is a great deterrent for thieves, who, more often than not, will not put out the effort required to uncover the boat by struggling with a canvas boat cover.

The canvas boat cover will offer you many other advantages also. You will find that this material will give you unparalleled durability and strength. At the same time canvas is very affordable when comparing it to other materials. Many companies will offer discount sales and if you buy your canvas boat cover during this time, you can get real value for money while ensuring the longevity of your boat and its protection from the vagaries of nature and other elements.

Planning A Getaway In California

By Cindy Heller

When it comes to a northern california vacation, you definitely have a lot to pick and choose from. Just hop online and see what I mean. I must admit that although I don”t love the California heat, I do enjoy seeing all they have to offer. If you are in the mood this season for a nice and relaxing northern california vacation, then I suggest you do something about it and quickly. The cool thing about California is that it has all the beach scenes, it has the Hollywood thing going on, it has the great nightlife, it has the amenities, but it also has the desert.

Experience The Long Beach, California

Long Beach, California will hold beautiful memories for many of us, my friends and myself included. Once you arrive at the place, get reminisced, refreshed, rested, and hit for the town. After a stint back at your air-conditioned apartment, where you can do henna tattoos and tarot readings, you can go for Italian food in a crowded but friendly (popular) local place called Ciravello’’s Restaurant and Sports Bar. The most remarkable of Long Beach California experiences, though, happened at midnight. More on this in the next paragraph.

One piece of advice I have always listened to and passed on is to hang out with locals when you are touring, for you will get to experience the underbelly of the vacation spot, not just the touristy areas. Try to eat outside, not only so you can smoke but so you can pick up more of the outer ambience. You can lunch at a classic diner and shop along Pine Avenue, where curiosities and collectibles meet with contemporary and other arts and souvenirs. When night falls, if fate in your favor, you can strip down and go swimming in the Pacific. No one but you and your loved one will be frolicking and slip-sliding about in soft, smooth, sleek calm waters.

So for you who visit the playful town (or city, really, with a population of almost a half a million), the parks and playhouses and plazas might turn your crank. Or, the realization that major celebrities live or lived there might be the crowning moment in your Long Beach, California vacation. You might be thrilled to know, then, that Bobby Burgess and Bo Derek; the Doggs, Snoop and Nate; Spike Jones; Billie Jean King; and many, many other superstars have lived or do live there. And I am sure some even visit now and again. Maybe you will rub elbows with someone!

A couple of years back, my friends and I rented a sporty car from San Francisco, packed some art and writing supplies, and headed south along the coast toward Long Beach, California. We deliberately went without a map so we could serendipitously explore new areas and people and things to write about and photograph. In spite of all the amazing and stunning history, scenery, and activity we enjoyed along the way (the missions, the Orange County Fair, and more), our arrival in and visit at Long Beach was giftedly pleasing.

If you are in the mood for a nice northern california vacation, it’’s now time to give a northern california vacation a shot. You can hop on a trolley in San Francisco and check out all the wonderful city has to offer. If you prefer the internet, All you need is your personal computer and Internet access to get started. Pop open that nifty Google search engine and go to town. Well, so to speak. Just punch in the key phrase “northern california vacation” and you”ll be flooded with great results. Due to the darn high priced to live there, you may want to do your research and prebook some low cost hotel or motel before heading for northern California.

If you are still wondering if you should have your next vacation in California, just think, on your California vacation, you won”t be too far from Vegas. This may mean you have to take another vacation immediately after. Can you really pass up on Vegas? So start planning today. With so much information that is readily available to you, it’’s a synch to plan your next big trip from the privacy of your living room.

What To Do If You Get Lost While Hiking

By John Edmond

Ever have this feeling?: That tree looks a little familiar… or maybe not. Have you passed that bush already? Hey, where”d that rock come from? That wasn”t there the last time. You could keep going, but the sun’’s sinking fast and it will be dark soon. Face it, you”re lost.

You may have even had this experience happen to you, but you have always managed to find your course again with no problem. This time, though, the fear is nearly choking and it is not the situation you hoped you would be in. Relax. There are still a few things you can do to get your bearings again. Take a deep breath, clear your head and follow these steps.

First, it is very wise for you to take every precautionary measure you can to make sure you do not get lost in the first place. It does sound overly simple, but hikers often get lost due to poor planning. Be sure that you take a map with you. Make sure that it is an updated map, as trails and landmarks often change.

Bring two compasses with you. Many hikers have doubted their compass, so it is a good idea to have another one to compare it to. If they are both saying the same thing, trust them! If you have no prior experience with a compass, you can most likely find out all that you need to know at a local community center or outdoor store. Before you embark on your journey, you need to study a map of the area you will be traveling. Get to know the trails, streams, and mountains that will make up the land you are traveling.

It is also vitally important to tell someone you know that you are going to be hiking. This is important because it ensures that someone will notice your absence if you are lost for an extended period of time. You do not want to be missing without someone knowing that you are missing! Tell your family or friends exactly where you are going, and how long you plan to be there.

As you hike, take notice of all of the topography around you. Pay attention to ridges, summits, rivers, etc. These natural reference points just may end up saving your life. Again, make good use of your map and compasses. You have them, so use them. If you find yourself even the slightest bit unsure of where you are, access your map. Hikers often dig themselves a deeper hole by thinking that they can fix the situation on their own. Use the tools that you bring with you.

If you do find that you are becoming disoriented, stop. Take out your map and search your surroundings for a familiar landmark. Most of the time, people are able to regain their sense of direction by taking five minutes to study their map and surroundings. Five minutes is all it can take to prevent the situation from escalating into a more serious, dangerous matter.

If you have already tried backtracking to locate familiar landmarks and have had no success, S.T.O.P. - stop, think, observe and plan. Don”t go any further and stay where you are. Getting distracted and changing your direction will only make things worse, so stay focused and calm. Panic will use up stores of energy that you might need later on.

If you have a whistle, blow it at timed intervals to alert rescuers. If you have to, start gathering materials for a rescue signal. At the very least it will keep you occupied and at the most you will have made something that rescuers could spot easily.

As with anything, the right amount of preparation, planning, and precautions will help you to avoid getting lost while hiking. If you do get lost, knowing what to do means you will have a better chance of being found or finding your way back. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best, as the saying goes. Knowledge is power and armed with that fact, you should have an enjoyable hiking experience.

The Midland Hotel in Manchester

By James Johnson

It’’s the place where Rolls first met Royce, and has been a Manchester legend since it was built in 1903, but the Midland Hotel is showing no signs of falling behind the times. It may have been slightly eclipsed by the new giants of The Lowry Hotel and Radisson Edwardian in recent years, but a massive restoration project that began in 2004 has breathed new life into the Midland.

This grand hotel was originally built by the Midland Railway Company to provide respite for weary business travellers, which is why a hotel in Manchester is called The Midland.

As one of the most familiar buildings in Manchester city centre, I”m well used to looking at the exterior of The Midland, usually whilst waiting, waiting, waiting for a tram in St Peter’’s Square. So I couldn”t really have any first impressions walking up to the hotel, but the entrance and lobby area are exactly what you would hope for and expect. High ceilings, mirrors, stately furnishings and lots of class are what you get when you walk into The Midland Hotel, and even the most jaded business traveller would have to be impressed.

Check-in was incredibly easy and it took only a matter of minutes from arrival to be headed for the wall of lifts at the end of the lobby and on our way to the room.

The refurbishment process somehow managed to create nine new rooms - taking the total up to 312 - as well as upgrading all the rest of them. And it is here where the benefits of the facelift are most evident. In a century-old hotel, you might expect the rooms to be rather old-fashioned and dated, but while they are certainly still classic in design, these rooms are now far from past their best. The paintwork mostly looks shiny-new, and the bathrooms are noticeably similar to the ones you”d find in The Lowry (though the Radisson’’s wet-rooms are sadly absent here).

One of the most obvious improvements is in the televisual department, with a flat-screen TV set on a swivelling stand so that you can point it in the direction of the sofa or the bed, depending on where you fancy watching the box. There are the usual option in terms of channels (basically Freeview plus a few pay-per-view movie channels plus pay-per-oo-er porn channels), and it all works very nicely indeed. Wi-fi internet access is also standard in all the rooms, as is air-conditioning.

One area where our room suffered in comparison with both The Lowry and the Radisson was the view. With The Midland being a big old traditional building, a sizeable proportion of the rooms only get a view of the rooms on the other three sides of the hotel, rather than a glamorous vision of urban Manchester in all its splendour. While this is only a slight problem in a city-centre hotel (it’’s not like you”re missing out on a view of a Caribbean beach after all), there was one more serious issue we had.

That was the bed. At a four-star hotel like this, you expect comfort at the very least from the most important item in the room, but The Midland’’s beds just aren”t that comfy. For one thing, they are too short for a man of by height (6″3), which is just daft these days. How would Peter Crouch cope? Even more annoyingly, the mattresses on the bed were not exactly welcomingly soft, meaning that I woke up early with a bad back. Beds are obviously a subjective issue, and many people would find those at The Midland to be perfectly fine, but quite honestly I didn”t.

One of the most popular aspects of The Midland Hotel is its elegance, and nowhere is this more evident than in The French restaurant, which was mostly untouched by the refurbishments because it was decided that altering its classic design would be a big mistake. And they were right, because it’’s a stunningly opulent room, particularly with two new chandeliers hanging overhead. The menu is equally fancy, so it might not be the place for people with limited palates, while it is worth pointing out that four tieless Beatles were once barred from entering, so don”t turn up in a paint-stained pair of overalls…

A new area of the hotel is The Wyvern, a stylish new bar in which to relax and unwind, situated at the front of the hotel overlooking St Peter’’s Square and the hustle and bustle of the city centre. Of course, The Midland’’s excellent location means that you are never far away from anything in town, least of all with a tram stop just outside the front door, not to mention Central Library, which is only over the road.

About The Author

James Johnson, well travelled and lives out of a suitcase. I have set out to prove Manchester Hotels are as good as anywhere in the country. Especially the Midland Hotel Manchester.
